A hard cooler is one of the most expensive pieces of camping gear, and the price range is huge. This comparison covers one 45 to 52 quart hard cooler each from Grizzly, RTIC, Coleman, and Igloo, with price per quart, weight, and warranty side by side, so you can see what the premium actually gets you. If you want wheels, see our guide to the best wheeled coolers.

How We Chose

We picked four well known hard cooler brands that sell a 45 to 52 quart cooler without wheels on Amazon and compared price, capacity, weight, and warranty. The sizes are not identical: the RTIC is 52 quarts, the Igloo is 50 quarts, and the Grizzly and Coleman are 45 quarts, so we added a cost per quart column. Wheeled coolers have their own guide. The Amazon title for the Coleman says with wheels, but the Coleman product page for this model number lists none, so we show it here. Warranty terms come from the manufacturer’s own website where it names the model or product line, then from the Amazon listing, and we say so where neither gave a length. This is a researched comparison, not a hands-on test of these coolers, so the comparison rests on manufacturer specifications and Amazon listing details, and we make no claims about ice retention. The Coleman, Igloo, RTIC and Grizzly are all available on Amazon. We dropped the YETI Tundra 45 because Amazon only offered it through a third-party seller, and we dropped the non-wheeled Pelican Elite coolers for the same reason. Specs and warranties come from the manufacturer pages named in the table where they gave a value. The Grizzly page lists the product but not our exact model number, and we say so in the table. Our Take

If you want the lowest price, the Igloo Trailmate 50 Qt is the cheapest and lightest here, with a 1 year warranty. If you want a capable cooler with a longer warranty, the Coleman Pro 45-Quart is the practical choice, with a 10 year warranty on its product page. If you want a premium hard cooler at a lower cost than the Grizzly, the RTIC Ultra-Light offers more capacity, less weight, and a lower price, with a 3 year warranty against the Grizzly’s lifetime warranty. Choose the Grizzly for a lifetime warranty on a rotomolded 45 quart body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a premium hard cooler worth the price?

It depends on how you use it. Premium coolers like the Grizzly and RTIC here cost much more per quart than the Coleman and Igloo. Compare weight, warranty, and features against what you will actually use it for.

Do I need a cooler with wheels?

A fully loaded cooler is heavy, and wheels make it much easier to move over a driveway or campground. The tradeoff is added weight and cost. None of the four here has wheels, so see our best wheeled coolers guide if you want them.

What size cooler do I need for a weekend camping trip?

A 45 to 52 quart cooler typically fits food and drinks for two to four people for a weekend, depending on how much ice you use. Larger groups or longer trips may need more capacity.

How do I keep ice longer in a cooler?

Pre chill the cooler, use block ice or a mix of block and cubes, keep it in the shade, and open the lid as little as possible. Fill empty space to reduce air.
